Round About

We walked down to catch the bus to the Costa Rican border this morning, curious to look around at Rio Sereno.

Catching a bus is something we do really well. Extend arm at a 30 degree angle, move arm down then up 3 times while maintaining eye contact. We're pros.

Grabbing a seat on the shady side, we headed confidently up the road to Rio Sereno.

The bus immediately made a U-turn and headed up towards Cerro Punta.

Wrong bus.

I forgot to mention; always read the destination sign posted in the window.

We quickly adjusted our plans and went along for the ride.

When competence fails, we try always to embrace flexibility and humility . It makes for a happier day.

So we had our happy day up above Cerro Punta, in a little valley pueblo called Guadalupe.

Guadalupe is a wonderful little town set high in the mountains.

The wet clouds from the Caribbean side waft, and occasionally rampage, over the ridge. The mist gently falls on the hillside vegetable plots that are the commercial life-blood.

The most renowned bird watching lodge is here, along with its lovely restaurant. Every other house has a greenhouse or seedling operation out back.

The place really hums, and we like the tune a lot.

An unusually colorful day-lily.

Charming nursery with an amazing collection of flowers and succulents.

The nursery owner pointed out many of his prize specimens.

The steep hills around Guadalupe are in vegetable production year-round.

Paint your old tires. Stack them up. Throw in some dirt and seeds. Voila.

This mural on a school wall depicts the names of older homes and buildings in Guadalupe Valley.

The cook house.

Blackened pots stacked outside the kitchen. Starr's prize papaya in the bag.

Misty clouds boil over the hill from the Caribbean. Locals stay dry.
